There are seasons in life when we do not know what to do next.
We may have plans, hopes, and dreams, but suddenly something changes. A door closes. An opportunity does not come. A prayer seems unanswered. We find ourselves standing at a crossroads, wondering which direction to take.
In such moments, we often want God to show us the entire road before we take the first step. We want to know where a decision will lead, how a difficult situation will end, and what tomorrow will bring.
But God does not always show us the whole way.
Sometimes He simply asks us to trust Him.
Proverbs 3:5–6 (NIV) says, “Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding.” This is a call to trust God even when our understanding cannot explain what is happening.
Our understanding is limited. We see only a small part of the picture, while God sees the beginning, the middle, and the end. We see what is happening today; He already knows what tomorrow will bring.
That is why leaning completely on our own understanding can become dangerous. When we cannot make sense of a situation, fear can easily take over. We may begin to think that because we cannot see a way forward, there must be no way forward.
But our inability to see the way does not mean that God does not know the way.
Think about travelling on a road at night. Your headlights may not illuminate the entire road ahead, but they give you enough light to continue safely. You do not stop the journey simply because you cannot see everything that lies several kilometers ahead.
In the same way, God may not reveal the entire future to us. He may give us enough light for the next step.
That can be difficult for us because we like certainty. We want answers before we move. We want to know that everything will work out before we trust.
Faith, however, often means taking the next step while trusting the One who already knows the destination.
The passage continues, “In all your ways submit to him.” (Proverbs 3:6, NIV)
Notice that it says “all your ways.”
God is not interested only in the major decisions of our lives. He wants us to acknowledge Him in everything. We can bring our plans, work, family, relationships, finances, ministry, disappointments, and fears before Him.
We can tell Him honestly, “Lord, I do not know what to do, but I trust You. Please lead me.”
Trusting God does not mean that we stop thinking or making responsible decisions. It means that we refuse to make ourselves the final authority. We pray, search God’s Word, seek wise counsel when necessary, and then surrender our plans to His direction.
Sometimes God’s direction may not look like what we expected.
A closed door may be difficult to understand. A delay may test our patience. A change of plans may disappoint us. Yet God can use even those situations to redirect our steps.
We may not understand the reason immediately. Sometimes we may never understand it completely.
But we can still trust the One who sees what we cannot see.
Perhaps you are facing such a season today. Maybe you have been praying about something and still do not know what the answer will be. Perhaps you are worried about your future, your family, your work, or a decision that must be made.
Do not allow uncertainty to convince you that God has abandoned you.
The fact that you cannot see the road ahead does not mean that God has lost sight of you.
He knows where you are.
He knows what you are carrying.
He knows what lies ahead.
And He knows the way.
Proverbs 3:6 gives us this promise: “In all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.”
A straight path does not necessarily mean an easy path. Following God does not guarantee a life without difficulties. There may still be obstacles, delays, disappointments, and unexpected turns.
But when God leads us, we do not walk alone.
So, if you cannot see the whole way today, do not be afraid to take the next faithful step.
Pray.
Trust God’s Word.
Seek His direction.
And when He gives you the next step, take it.
You do not need to know everything before you trust God. You do not need to see the entire road before you begin walking.
You only need to trust the One who knows the way.
Prayer
Lord, when I cannot see what lies ahead, help me to trust You. Forgive me for the times I depend completely on my own understanding. Teach me to acknowledge You in every area of my life and to follow Your direction even when I cannot see the whole road. Give me courage to take the next faithful step and peace to leave tomorrow in Your hands. Thank You for knowing the way when I do not. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
