Johnny Jernigan’s Testimony (Edited for the Web)

Johnny Jernigan Evangelist

In the Beginning …

It started 45 years ago, July 22,1979.

At sixteen, I was a boy looking for love, life, and direction. A friend in high school saw my confusion and invited me to her local church. I went with her, and I heard the message about the love of Jesus and how Jesus could change my future, give me life, and fill me with joy.

That night I accepted Jesus and my faith journey and ministry began. The Pastor told me, “Please tell someone tonight what Jesus did in your heart, and that you have become a Christian”.  So, I stopped at a 7-Eleven convenience store on my way home from church and told the woman behind the counter that tonight I had just accepted Jesus into my heart.

She high-fived me and said, “That’s amazing!”

I almost floated out of that 7-Eleven. It felt so good and so fulfilling to tell someone what Jesus did for me. That night I felt the transformation taking place in my life.

The Beginning of Ministry …

The next day, the Pastor called me on the telephone and invited me to make visits with him. I met him at the church at 6 p.m. that evening. We crossed the street from the church and knocked on doors. We were cursed so violently at the first home that the Pastor said, “We can just go back to the church, Johnny. That was a really tough experience for a new Christian.”

Yes, it was tough, but it was also my introduction to evangelism. All I knew was that I didn’t want the night to end. I already felt the call of God in my heart. I told the Pastor, “No. Let’s go to the next home.”

We knocked on the next door. A sweet lady about 40 years old opened it. She greeted us and invited us into her home. I remember that she gave each of us a sweating glass of sweet iced tea, and a huge chocolate chip cookie. While we snacked, the Pastor shared the plan of salvation with her. When he finished, the Pastor looked me in the eye and directed, “Johnny, tell her what God did for you last night.”

I never did this before and didn’t know what to say. I gulped down the lump in my throat and responded, “I’m not getting drunk anymore! I got saved last night!”

The Pastor questioned, “Isn’t that wonderful to hear from a young teenager?” She agreed. The Pastor then asked her, if she would like to place her faith and eternal destination in Jesus?

She answered, “yes!”

At that moment, her experience with Jesus changed from casual belief to personal salvation relationship. I’ll never forget her standing up and laughing like Woody Woodpecker. She was happy to be born again, and hopeful for her eternal destination.

She died several years ago, and I preached at her funeral. I explained to her loved ones that I was there the night she became a Christ follower, and now I was here to celebrate her home-going.

Since then, I set aside time almost every week to tell others about Jesus. Telling others about my faith in Jesus is more alive in me now at 60 years of age, than it was during those first hours of being a follower of Jesus, 43 years ago. The purpose of my life is to tell others about Jesus.

Heaven’s Thunder Band – Worship Leaders

Deeply rooted in the classic/southern rock genre with more than a hint of contemporary worship tossed in, the Heaven’s Thunder Band found influences from groups like: Third Day, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Jesus Culture, and Casting Crowns. Their blend of guitars and keyboards, sitting on top of a solid foundation of heavy bass and hard-driving drums, sets the stage for a positive message evoked through their vocals.

Heaven's Thunder Band

The Heaven’s Thunder Band appears at venues ranging from community block-parties to Faith & Family events. They are also regulars at Large Church Worship events, and local sports stadiums where they perform at faith-based programs. Last year they appeared at the Reading Fightins, the Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs, the Philadelphia SOUL, the Reading Royals and everything in between. In recent years, the award winning group accepted invitations to play at multiple “Battle of the Bands.” They were also nominated for “Best Christian Classic Rock Band.” The Heaven’s Thunder Band will take you for a ride. The only question is, “Where will the ride take you?”

About Johnny Jernigan Ministries

Johnny Jernigan Ministries exists to organize, train, and mobilize Christians and congregations for community influence and to advance the gospel of Jesus Christ. Johnny and his wife, Karen, travel extensively teaching, preaching, and training.  Johnny is the Director of Evangelism for the Assemblies of God in the State of Alabama and is an assistant to the National Evangelism Director in Springfield, Missouri. Their story is one of influence and evangelism fervor.

Johnny and Karen Jernigan began their ministry over 35 years ago soon after the high school sweethearts married in March of 1984 in Mobile, Alabama. After the honeymoon, they moved to Lakeland, Florida to attend Southeastern Assemblies of God University where Johnny received a Batchelor’s in Theology and in Ministry. Karen received a degree in Elementary Education. Later she received a master’s degree from the University of Mobile. After graduation in 1986, the couple moved to Birmingham, Alabama to become youth ministers at the Grayson Valley Assembly of God. The Youth Ministry grew from 10 to almost 100 during the next nine months.

In 1987, the Jernigan’s moved back to Mobile, Alabama to be youth ministers at their home church, the Knollwood Assembly of God. Over the next five years, their new charge grew from twenty-five to over 250 students. Then at the height of his success as a youth minister, Johnny felt the tug of the Holy Spirit to become an Evangelist.

After recognizing the Call to Evangelism in 1992, Johnny Jernigan Ministries began. Johnny’s unique connection with students led to 15 years youth centric evangelism. During that time, Johnny spoke at over 120 youth camps, more than 75 youth conferences and countless High Schools assemblies. His “Choice of Champions High School Assembly Program” made  Johnny one of the most sought after youth speakers in all of the Assemblies of God.

In 2006, after almost 15 years on the road, Johnny and Karen returned to their roots and planted The City Church of Mobile in their hometown in Alabama. The church launched with 11 people at their first gathering and after 2 years, the church was averaging over 400 in attendance.

The church grew to over 500 congregants with ministries throughout the Mobile Area. It reflected the multicultural community with a multicultural staff and outreach. Today, The City Church of Mobile is still a thriving and influential congregation in the city of Mobile, Alabama.

2016 brought a fresh challenge. Johnny and Karen returned to the life and calling of the evangelist with the creation of Johnny Jernigan Evangelistic Ministries and The Champions Foundation. The focus of their renewed evangelistic vision is to organize, train, and mobilize local churches for community influence. Johnny believes that sharing individual faith in Jesus must be a priority for every believer.
