There’s a sacred stillness that settles on the campus this time of year, just as the mountain laurel begins to bloom. If you’ve ever walked our campus in late May, you’ve likely felt it: that quiet awe that comes from being surrounded by nature’s elegance, brushed into being by the hand of our Creator. It’s beauty on the Mountain
Our Name Sake
As one of the founders of Laurel Mountain Ministries, I’ve walked this land countless times. It was during one of my walks in the woods that I was struck by the beauty of the mountain laurel that grows abundantly across the hillside. Those graceful clusters of pink and white blossoms seemed to frame every path and gather in quiet worship on the slopes. It was in that moment, standing among the laurel and sensing the presence of God on the property, that the name Laurel Mountain Ministries was born.
Since that day, the name has taken root. Although there was no official title on a map, the Mountain the Ministries calls home has come to be known simply as “Laurel Mountain” by those living near us. The name reflects not just the flora, but the spirit of this place—a refuge of natural beauty, quiet reflection, and sacred purpose.
Created Beauty
Each spring, usually the week before and after Memorial Day, the mountain laurel returns in full glory. It’s a short window, but one that transforms the campus into a living canvas. The bushes burst into bloom, with delicate petals shaped like tiny cups—soft white tinged with blush pink, scattered like joyful confetti through the woods. It’s as if God Himself has decorated the mountain to welcome summer.
This year, we’re especially excited to share the beauty with others through our newly opened Nature Trail. The photos in this post were taken just this week during a walk along the trail. If you haven’t visited yet, the trail winds through peaceful forest and open glades, offering quiet moments to pause and reflect, often right beside blooming mountain laurel. Soon you’ll find benches, subtle Scripture markers, and a sense of stillness that invites you to slow down and listen.
A Mission of Connection
Laurel Mountain Ministries’ mission is to provide a space for connection, connection with God, with creation, and with each other. The mountain laurel is a reminder of that mission. It grows wild and free, rooted in rocky, uncultivated soil, blooming year after year without fail. It teaches us to be present, to notice, and to find joy in God who spoke the Word of creation.
If you’re nearby, I invite you to come walk the trail during these special few weeks. Bring a camera, a journal, or just your open heart. The mountain is blooming. It’s a sight, and a blessing, you won’t want to miss.
